If you’ve been to Huntington Beach lately, you may have noticed that the advertising agency INNOCEAN is slowly taking over the town. This includes their editing facility ORANGE that doubles on occasion as an art gallery. For Their latest gallery show they not only featured world renowned artist Josh Agle (aka SHAG), but also commissioned a painting. The subject, what else… a commercial shoot.
I’ve worked on a number of projects with INNOCEAN, so I was excited when they approached me with the idea of making a documentary about Josh, his career, and his thoughts behind this painting entitled “Wrap Party on 5th”. Shot at Josh’s studio in Costa Mesa, this is a fun, fast moving short doc that takes you into the strange and never boring world of SHAG. His art work pops off the screen, and he gave me a great interview to craft the story with. If you’re not familiar with SHAG, you’re in for a treat, plus anyone in the business will certainly appreciate his blow by blow narration behind the big blue painting that now hangs in the lobby at INNOCEAN.
Surrounding this event was an official unveiling of the painting followed by a screening of the short film in front of the entire office. I’ve had the pleasure of being in many film festivals, and there’s nothing like watching peoples reaction to your work. Plus it was formal attire (Mad Men theme), so I actually “dressed up”. In the ever casual, dress for comfort culture I live and work in, wearing slacks and a sports jacket makes me feel like I’m on vacation. If you’ve got a couple minutes, and especially if you’re in this crazy business, I would urge you to check it out!
